McCain doesn’t know how many houses he owns…Obama is there to explain.

It was the kind of political gift a candidate can only hope for. Obama was getting tarred pretty well with the elitist celebrity tag the McCain team had created. Obama’s camp was attempting to retort calling McCain the original political celebrity, it wasn’t really sticking, especially on the elitist front.

Then John McCain went and said something rather bone-headed to the politico

From the story:

“I think — I’ll have my staff get to you,” McCain told Politico in Las Cruces, N.M. “It’s condominiums where — I’ll have them get to you.”

I’m not entirely sure what to make of the comments myself. Is it that the man owns so many houses he lost count? Is it that he couldn’t remember? Is it that he thought his staff would know the best strategic answer? Whatever way you slice it, it was not a good comment for McCain, especially coming on the heels of his “5 million dollars” comment in Saddleback.

So in the race to see which rich elitist can seem like less of a rich elitist the campaigns have begun the snark wars.

Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) told Politico’s Ben Smith that it was McCain “who wears $500 shoes, has six houses and comes from one of the richest families in his state.”

A McCain Spokesman fired back:

Does a guy who made more than $4 million last year, just got back from vacation on a private beach in Hawaii and bought his own million-dollar mansion with the help of a convicted felon really want to get into a debate about houses? Does a guy who worries about the price of arugula and thinks regular people ‘cling’ to guns and religion in the face of economic hardship really want to have a debate about who’s in touch with regular Americans?…

My take away, this will rank with Obama’s “cling to their guns…” comment. It will hurt McCain with some Reagan democrats that were looking for a reason not to vote for him, but not enough to make a major hit in the polls. What it will dampen though is the Obama=Out of touch rhetoric of previous weeks and months.

My sincere hope is that it kills the debate over who is an every-man for the rest of the season.

Though the wealth is both his and his spouse’s,
And he fancies he’s close to the throne,
Politicians who live in glass houses
Should be briefed on how many they own.
Light verse, ripped from the headlines
